
Cooling coils and condenser coils look similar — copper tubes threaded through aluminium fins — but they do opposite jobs in a refrigeration cycle. Confusing the two leads to wrong specifications and poor performance.

What a cooling coil does
A cooling coil (the evaporator side in a DX system, or a chilled-water coil) absorbs heat from the air passing over it. Refrigerant or chilled water inside the tubes is colder than the air, so heat flows into the coil and the air leaves cooler and drier.
Cooling coils sit inside air handling units and fan-coil units. If you need to cool a space, you're specifying a cooling coil.
What a condenser coil does
A condenser coil does the reverse — it rejects heat. Hot, high-pressure refrigerant from the compressor flows through it and dumps its heat to the outside air, condensing from gas back to liquid.
Condenser coils live on the outdoor/heat-rejection side of the system. If you need to get rid of heat, you're specifying a condenser coil.
Key differences at a glance
Cooling coils operate at low temperature and pressure and remove heat from indoor air; condenser coils operate at high temperature and pressure and reject heat outdoors. Condensers usually run at higher pressures, so their construction and testing must account for that.
Both rely on the same fundamentals — copper purity, a tight tube-to-fin bond and clean brazing — which is why both should be pressure-tested before installation.
Which one do you need?
If your problem is a warm space, you need a cooling coil. If your problem is rejecting heat or a system running high head pressure, you need a condenser. Many systems need both, matched to each other's capacity.
